For the first time this season, the Sabercats offense was held to less than 200 yards of total offense. The usually prolific passing game that has produced an average of exactly 200 passing yards per week gained only 73 yards against the undefeated Utah Renegades. The leaders of the AA South division proved themselves tough on defense holding the Sabercats to only 56 yards in the ground attack as well.
In the absence of Quarterback Tyler Collingwood, Jarod Briggs took the reigns of the Sabercats offense in the team's first true road trip of the season. Momentum built against the Sabercats from the very start as their unsuccessful opening drive was capped off with a high snap to the punter that resulted in a safety. From there, the offense struggled to find their groove while the Renegades offense was firing on all cylinders scoring 16 in the first quarter. By halftime, the Renegades were holding at comfortable 30-0 lead.
The second half fared better for the Sabercats with bright spots in a 55 yard touchdown completion from Briggs to Cody Bates and a forced fumble by Junior Williams recovered by Gabe Moreno who also had an interception in the game. The Renegades defense, however, added two more scores in the second half returning a punt and an interception for touchdowns. At the final whistle, the Sabercats were handed their third loss of the season with a score of 58-8.
The Sabercats now have two weeks off with a bye week and the Memorial weekend league-wide bye before the last two regular season games on the road against the Treasure Valley Spartans (0-5) and the Arco Anarchy (4-2).
